Job Market Minute: LinkedIn Recommendations

May 29, 2012 4:58:53 AM

Did you know there are Recruiters out there that won't give you a second look unless you have three or four LinkedIn recommendations? But sometimes it's hard to get someone to take the time to write one from scratch.

So, here's a method of collecting them easily:

Email your past managers, co-workers, staff, vendors and customers. Let them know you're currently in the job market, and ask them to answer three questions:

  • What do you remember as my greatest strengths?
  • What was the biggest accomplishment I had when we worked together?
  • Is there anything else you would like to tell an employer about me?

Then condense each person's answers into one paragraph and email it back to him/her, asking them to copy and paste it into a LinkedIn recommendation for you. Include a link to your public LinkedIn profile and it'll take them two minutes. Don't forget to thank them in advance.

My clients that have used this technique have seen a 20-40% response rate from the number of emails sent out, so if you email 20 of your old (or current) co-workers, you can easily see 4-8 LinkedIn recommendations show up on your profile within a week or two... Now that's a great profile!

I wish you the very best in your search this holiday week!
