Your Job Market Minute: Getting to First Base

I've referred to job searching before as being a lot like baseball, where you have to run all of the bases, step by step, before you can win the game and start the job. But most six figure job seekers I see are throwing their balls, catching a few and running around, but not performing these methodically in any way. It ends up looking a lot like a ballgame warm-up.

Let me give you some tips on getting to first base, which is getting the initial attention of employers. You must effectively convey, in all of your written and verbal communications, your core strengths and your unique value proposition. What are you better at than anyone else holding that job? What is your expertise? And the key to generating employer interest is results. Tell decision makers what they'll get, not what you'll do. Talk less about you and more about them. This will get you into the game.
