YOUR JMM: 3 Forces in Today’s Marketplace

Apr 18, 2013 10:00:23 PM

Did you know that each published position you apply for receives up to 1,000+ other applicants?

If it’s been more than 5 years since you’ve looked for a job, it’s important to understand how the job market has evolved. With that many other job seekers competing for the same positions, you need to become familiar with the following 3 forces.

Economic- This refers to my statistic above. There are roughly 20 million other current job seekers. This amount of competition can leave your qualifications extremely difficult to find. Which brings us to our other 2 forces.

Social- I don’t think this can be emphasized enough, but active and effective networking is essential. Stay in touch with those you’ve done business with in the past and always be adding to your mobile rolodex. Engage in productive conversations with other professionals and take the opportunity to learn from each other.

Technological- Current technology has revolutionized how we search. Make yourself, your achievements, and qualifications findable. Put yourself out there on LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter and use these as networking platforms. Remain professional and active on these social sites and use them to your best advantage.

It’s important to keep in mind that your LinkedIn page is your online resume. This gives you the opportunity to show prospects how they can benefit from you and show that you are both professional and relevant. Not showing up here could disprove your value.

Understanding how these 3 forces work together will help to stand out amongst the immense competition. It will also lead you to be a better understanding of today’s marketplace and leverage you for success in minimizing your job search time.
