GPT4 recommended that the title of this article (which I wrote without the help of AI) include: How Strategic Personal Branding Can Translate into an Additional Six Figures.
However, since this article is about crafting a LinkedIn profile that captures the attention of recruiters and hiring managers, I'm keeping the title short enough to capture your attention. 😎
Let's get into it.
What is personal branding, and why will you get paid a whole lot more when you utilize this principle?
Branding - particularly on your LinkedIn profile - will give you the most valuable currency today... ATTENTION.
When a decision-maker spends minutes instead of seconds reading your profile, the end result can be the addition of six figures to your compensation. (That's not an exaggeration; our clients have averaged an additional $132,665 in annual cash comp in their new jobs since 2020.)
Will a great LinkedIn profile result in extra cash by itself? No. But senior-level professionals who don't present a compelling, clear message of their value in their first impression rarely see that increase.
𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗲𝘅𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗹𝘆 𝗶𝘀 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗯𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴? I could talk for days (and usually do) about this topic, and it has so many nuances, but one of the ways it's different than plain ol' resume writing is that it's future-focused instead of just documenting the past.
No one takes the time to connect the dots between what you've done in the past and what you can do for the reader.
Humans have an attention span shorter than a guppie's, remember?
Gary Larson reminds us to keep our personal branding concise.
𝗙𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗽? Decide what general role you would like to fill, what type of company you would enjoy working for, and, given those two answers, who would be the decision-maker you want to attract.
You can't really have a persuasive personal brand (i.e. LinkedIn profile, resumes, etc.) without the answers to those questions. It doesn't mean you have to be a specialist (that's a myth that job seekers believe if they are only applying to posted positions).
