Your Job Market Minute: Starting a Great Search from Scratch

Oct 22, 2012 9:48:17 AM

Sometimes you just put off starting your executive job search because you don't even know where to begin. So let me give you some basics to start with:

A great search starts before you even start searching. It starts with developing your communication, including a Rock Star resume. Quantify your achievements on this resume, as it's your written 30-second commercial.

Next, create a robust LinkedIn profile, because that's what employers and Recruiters look at when they get your resume. A quick way to do this is to search Linked in for the type of position you're looking for and swipe some of the keywords and phrases they use that match your skills and strengths.

Then get your professional references in order; choose three or four and coach them on your greatest strengths and remind them of the achievements you performed when you were working with them.

After that, send a short individual email to everyone you know, letting them know you're in the market and what you're looking for.

Then your campaign can begin by proactively sending your resume to the companies you want to work for, chosen by size, industry and location.

This may seem like a lot to do and a bit overwhelming, but a great place to start is to pick up my free 42-page manual, "The 10 Things You MUST Do in order to Get Your Next Six Figure Job Fast."You can get it sent to you by visiting:
