Your Job Market Minute: What if You're Overqualified?

Aug 19, 2012 8:40:29 PM

A common hurdle my clients have faced before working with me is the liability of being overqualified, especially when they have over 20 years of experience.

If this applies to you, my guess is that you've been applying for the wrong positions. Believe it or not, if you have great experience or are highly skilled, it's actually easier for you to get a higher level, higher paid position with more responsibility than one that would be beneath your capabilities. And you can be paid what you're worth!

Did you know that only 15-25% of six-figure positions are publicly posted online? A great tactic instead is to proactively contact the companies you would want to work for. Find the decision maker using the advanced people search on LinkedIn, and send your resume to the person that would be your boss, not to Human Resources.

Have you been turned down for a job because you're "overqualified?" Join the discussion on my blog by leaving a reply below.

This month's Six Figure Pro free webinar is taking place this Wednesday at noon Central. You need to register to get dial-in instructions, which you can get byclicking here. Wednesday's topic is a popular and crucial one: "How to Choose a Job Title for your Resume that Gets the Phone Ringing"

And there will be a big announcement on the call - stay tuned!

I hope to hear you on the call!
