Your Job Market Minute: Does Ageism Still Exist?

Sep 17, 2012 11:42:23 AM

Most of my clients are over fifty, and the topic of ageism comes up a lot. In my nine years of experience marketing clients into $100K+ positions, I have really only seen advanced age as a true obstacle here in the Midwest after age 58.

If this is a concern for you, then proactively counter each of an employer's assumptions by giving examples of:

  • How active you are - "Can't wait to hit the links this weekend!"
  • How quickly you learn - "...And within 30 days I was instructing the team on how to use the new software..."
  • How up-to-date with technology you are - Bring your tablet into the interview with your questions for them typed up on it.
  • How many more years you plan to work - "I'm looking for a company that I can spend at least the next 5-7 years with" (yes - be specific!)

A decision maker can't ask about many of these subjects, but you know he or she will be thinking about them. Give yourself the opportunity to sell yourself beyond the elephant in the room.

I'll be speaking tomorrow night, Tuesday, at the Northland Cathedral job club, about how to articulate your expertise in an interview. I'll also be taking your questions about anything having to do with your personal career search. And, as always, I'll have a packet of good advice to hand out.

I'll send more information about it (the time, address) in a little bit, but I would love for you to attend, if you have the availability in your schedule.

I wish you the very best week in your career search!

Warm Regards,
