Your JMM: Why they aren't hiring you

Mar 25, 2013 11:31:16 AM

Today's lesson is one of marketing and sales - personally marketing yourself during the hiring process. This begins with the resume, continues with the online profile, includes all of the conversations, both by phone and face to face, and concludes with the negotiation process.

To me, as a constant student of both the top end job market and of personal marketing, I have observed six main issues that keep you as a "product" from being purchased from what you can consider your "consumer," or the hiring manager.

So let me outline to you in 60 seconds or less what those six key components are that are keeping decision makers from hiring you:

  1. They don't understand the problems YOU can solve for them. You aren't doing an effective job of articulating your expertise.
  2. They don't want or value your expertise, or they don't have the problems that you're good at solving. You would be filling a gap they don't have.
  3. They don't believe you. You haven't built a level of trust that comes with developing personal chemistry with the decision maker.
  4. They don't believe you can solve THEIR problems. They believe their pain is so great that you don't have the expertise to help them. Or they may feel their situation is hopeless or their processes are too broken for anyone to fix.
  5. They don't think they can afford you. This is a common one with the people that seek my help. But if you articulate your return on investment, or your expertise in a way that they can't NOT afford to take you on, then hiring you is a no brainer decision.
  6. They don't want or feel they need you NOW. It's a matter of timing. You haven't sufficiently created the sense of urgency in them that makes them want you immediately. This is supremely important! Most of my clients get hired within 2-3 weeks from the initial contact with their hiring manager simply by creating this sense of urgency.

To be quickly successful in a six-figure job search, you need to turn these things around to benefit you, and you'll find many opportunities awaiting you!

A quick congrats to my latest client to secure a position, Greg, who landed a CFO position within six weeks - a big shout out to you, my friend! He successfully created that all-important sense of urgency during a casual coffee with the decision maker.
