Choosing A Job Title for Your Executive Resume

May 5, 2013 9:00:43 PM

Many job seekers leave out the detail of a job title on their resume while applying for jobs. Well, without a job title, how are recruiters or hiring managers going to know what position you’re pursuing? Even if you don’t know exactly what you’re looking for yet, here’s why you should consider placing a job title at the top of your resume:

Why are job titles so important?

When it comes to job titles on your resume, they are not just recommended, they are vitally important. A job title will let a recruiter, an HR department or any decision maker know what position you want as well as what level you’re looking for.

A person looking to hire is likely not going to make the time to connect the dots of your resume and know what you’re looking for based on what you’ve done. Also, if you are interested in changing industries or pursue a higher level position, a job title is even more necessary.

Will a job title on my resume limit my options?

In short- no. In fact, it will do just the opposite. Roughly 50% of my clients will actually receive phone calls asking them if they would be interested in a different position than the position they listed at the top of their resume. By adding a job title, you are giving yourself a chance to clarify what direction you’d like to go in and what level you are qualified for.

Pick a job title and stick with it.

While you’re coming across job openings, you may be tempted to change your title each time you apply for a position. But, choosing a title and sticking to it throughout your job search process is equally important. If you are simply trying to fit into something differently than your targeted job title, then it may not be a good fit. However, if you are applying online, it is appropriate to state the title you’re applying for. Also- don’t assume just because you’re applying online they will know what you’re looking for. If you do apply online, put the job title you’re applying for at the top of your resume.

Choosing the right job title.

Don’t take the task of choosing the right job title lightly. If you’re unsure of what job title to post because you’re unsure of what exactly you want to do (which is common), try this:

Think about your most impressive achievements in your past positions. These are likely things that you are good at and that you enjoy. What are you most proud of? How did you improve the company’s bottom line? Did you save them money or did you make them money?

Now once you’ve thought about those, write your perfect job description. This will help you find your perfect job title. And don't be afraid to shoot high - a mistake I see a lot of job seekers make is applying for jobs below their qualifications.
