What I Told a Reporter from Fast Company about Recovering from a Bad Job Interview

May 11, 2015 1:53:49 PM

Today I'd like to share with you some advice I gave to a reporter for the magazine Fast Company this afternoon. She asked me, "What advice do you give someone trying to recover from a bad interview?" Well,  I'd like you to hear it first!

It's a great topic, and one that I've helped my clients overcome hundreds of times. Two quick things I can recommend.
1) Immediately send a handwritten thank you note to the decision maker with a  tremendous amount of enthusiasm for the job. Be specific as to what aspect of it excites you.
2) Give that employer value before you even get hired by conducting a quick Google filetype search and email them a white paper or PowerPoint deck that delivers great information.
Here's how you do it. Say you had an interview with a manufacturing company. You would use Google Chrome web browser and type in the following:
"Manufacturing industry trends 2015"+filetype:pdf
Copy that formula, just like that. You'll get a list of PDFs that contain those words ("Manufacturing industry trends 2015") in the file - find one that is applicable to the employer and send it to them as an attachment, saying,
"I was doing research in your industry and came across this great white paper that gives some important advice on page 34. You might want to check it out. It was a pleasure meeting you today, and I look forward to further discussions."
Or, you can look for a PowerPoint deck, that might have been presented at a conference or symposium that mentioned that company in its presentation. The Google filetype search might go like this:
"ABC Manufacturing Company"+filetype:ppt
You'll find a list of PowerPoint presentations with that company's name in it - you can often find a competitive comparison this way - most likely something the hiring manager has never seen!
If you'd like some help in your job search, be it just interview and negotiation coaching, or starting a complete six-figure search from scratch, just reply to this email to set up a conversation, or call our office at (816)600-2478. I can MAKE SURE you don't blow your next interview process!!
Have a productive week!
