Your JMM: Getting your resume "Rock Star Ready" for January

Dec 17, 2012 11:19:35 AM

A fact you need to know is that January is traditionally ALWAYS the biggest hiring month of the year, no matter what the unemployment rate. In fact, on average, hiring happens 19% more in January than in any other month. So you've got two weeks to get your resume in tip top shape to take advantage of January's hiring.

A lot of job seekers are a little unsure about what to put on their resumes that might attract an employer's attention. If you're in this boat, a good place to start is by removing things off your current resume.

For instance, whether you're using a chronological resume, or my recommended functional, or skills-based, format, don't detail your job history past twelve years ago. You can summarize your prior experience by stating, "Earlier Experience Includes:..." and listing the job titles and companies, but without dates of employment. You don't want your first "commercial" about yourself to divulge your age.

Leave off the months of employment on your most recent 12 years - this closes any unemployment gaps.

Don't list your personal hobbies and interests. Yes, an employer wants to know these things, but the proper time and place is not in your first introduction to them; save these for the interview. Remember, a resume has to be focused on what you can do for an employer.

Also, remove your references, or even the phrase, "References upon request." Every employer assumes they are. The best time to give an employer references is after a successful face to face conversation. At the end of the interview, hand them your reference sheet and say,"Well, you've heard about my experience from me, now I would love for you to talk with these people about their opinion of my talents."

If you're considering having your resume professionally written to take advantage of the January hiring burst, reply to this email and a member of my team will contact you to answer any questions you might have.
