Four Downsides of Getting a Promotion that No One Tells You About

Jun 21, 2014 11:42:09 AM

Career advice for six-figure professionals

For most people in the corporate world, a promotion is the prize that everyone is seeking. After all, a promotion often comes with a new title, a pay raise and a bigger office with a better view. While promotions are great, however, they do have several downsides that aren't mentioned in routine career advice.

Career Advice for the Recently Promoted

1. Jealousy Among Co-workers

Whether or not they say so, other employees who wanted your promotion are likely to be jealous of your success, especially if they have been around long enough to give you career advice. Don't give them career advice and don't gloat. Just be a compassionate and excellent leader, and they will accept the new role change in time.

2. Increased Responsibilities

Before your promotion, you were responsible for yourself. Now you are responsible for evaluating and giving career advice to a whole floor of people. The increased pressure and added responsibilities can be enough to make any leader seek out new career advice.

3. Longer Work Hours

Gone are the days of arriving at the last minute and slipping out a few minutes early at the end of the day. Now that you have increased work responsibilities, you will likely be putting in longer work hours to get everything done. Your hours may be especially long during your first weeks as you learn your new job.

4. Having to be the Bad Guy

As much as you loved gossiping with your co-workers or covering for each other so you could come in early or leave late, much of that fun will be over once you're their boss. As a leader, it is good career advice to set a good example at all times, and much of the idle gossip that happens in an office is inappropriate for leaders to take part in.
